वाशिंगटन, अमेरिका की वैश्विक खुदर कंपनी वालमार्ट ने अमेरिका की एक अदालत में पर्यावरण कानून के तहत अपना जुर्म कबूल करते हुए मामला निपटाने के लिए 11 करोड़ डॉलर (615 करोड़ रुपए से अधिक) की राशि भुगतने को तैयार हो गई है।
अमेरिकी न्याय विभाग ने बताया कि वालमार्ट स्टोर्स ने लास एंजेलिस और सैन फ्रांसिस्को में सरकारी वकीलों द्वारा दायर मामले में अपना दोष स्वीकार कर लिया है। कंपनी पर साफ पानी अधिनियम के उल्लंघन और पूरे अमेरिका में अपनी दुकानों से पर्यावरण की दृष्टि से खतरनाक सामग्री असुक्षित तरीके से फेंकने का आरोप था। कंपनी ने अमेरिका में कीटनाशक, फफूंदनाशक और चूहानाशक अधिनियम (फिफ्रा) के उल्लंघन के मामले में भी अपना दोष स्वीकार किया है।
वालमार्ट को इन सभी मामलों में आपराधिक और सिविल कानून के तहत दायर मामलों में करीब 8.16 करोड़ डॉलर का भुगतान करेगी। न्याय विभाग ने कहा ‘‘इसी तरह की गतिविधियों के लिए कैलिफोर्निया और मिसौरी ने भी पहले कार्रवाई की थी। इन मामलों को भी मिला कर वालमार्ट को संघीय और प्रांतीय पर्यावरण कानूनों के उल्लंघन के आरोपों को सुलझाने के कुल 11 करोड़ डॉलर से अधिक का भुगतान करना होगा।’’
अमेरिका के संघीय प्रशासन ने आरोप लगाया था कि वालमार्ट के पास अपने कर्मचारियों को स्टोर में खतरनाक कचरे के प्रबंधन और निपटान का प्रशिक्षण देने का कोई कार्यक्रम नहीं है। इसलिए खतरनाक कचरे को या तो नगरपालिका के कूड़ेदान में डाल दिया गया या यदि यह कोई तरल कचरा था तो उसे स्थानीय सीवर प्रणाली में डाल दिया जाता था फिर बिना किसी सुरक्षा के और दस्तावेज तैयार किए बगैर कंपनी के वापस किए गए सामानों के लिए बने छह केंद्रों पर भेजा जाता था।
पूरे अमेरिका में कंपनी के 4,000 स्टोर है। इनसे वह हजारों तरह की चीजें बेचती है। इनमें कुछ अमेरिकी कानून के तहत ज्वलनशील, छीजनकारी, जलन पैदा करने वाले, विषाक्त और खतरनाक सामान की श्रेणी में आते हैं।
